Call for Applications for the Hyman and Faye Halbert “New Beginnings” Collaboration Track for 2024-2025

 

The Halbert Centre and the Hyman and Faye Halbert Memorial Fund are pleased to announce the Hyman and Faye Halbert “New Beginnings” collaboration track for the academic year 2024-2025. This new grant aims to initiate and promote scholarly exchanges between faculty members of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and faculty affiliated with recognized higher education institutions in Canada that have never collaborated on a substantial basis before.

Eligibility: The “New Beginnings” Faculty Collaboration Grant is open to both tenured and non-tenured (with Teken) faculty members in the faculties of humanities, social sciences, social work, education, law and business administration at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Applications should include at least one collaborator from a higher education institution in Canada.

Grant Coverage: The grant will cover a contribution towards research activities (e.g. hiring research assistants, conducting surveys, purchasing data, professional editing or any acceptable expenses directly related to the research). A total maximum amount of $5,000 (Canadian Dollars).

 

Application Deadline: The final date for submission of grant applications is February 29, 2024.

Review and Decision: The Academic Committee of the Halbert Centre will review the applications and announce its decisions during the second semester.

Grant Utilization: The utilization of the grant is valid for a period of 12 months starting in October 2024.

Budget Management: The budget will be managed by the Halbert Centre, according to the details stated in the grant proposal.

General Instructions

To apply for the “New Beginnings” grant please include the documentation listed below.

  • A short cover letter
  • Letters of intent from all partners in the planned project. The letter should specify, shortly, the reasons for undertaking the joint project and the anticipated results of this collaboration.
  • This is a grant funded with the goal of facilitating new collaborations between academics. Please include a statement in your application indicating that no substantial collaboration has taken place between the participating parties prior to submission.
  • Current Curriculum Vitae for all members of the research exchange team, with a list of relevant publications.
  • A research plan (should not exceed 1,000 words). The research plan should be written for general academic readers and not for specialists in your field.

Your research program should include:

  • The research question or questions, the importance of the research to your discipline and its relation to the existing literature.
  • Potential methodology you intend to use.
  • The goals and potential contribution of this new collaboration.
  • A proposed budget.
    • Typical goals can be hiring research assistants, professional editing, purchasing data, conducting surveys or any acceptable expenses directly related to the research.
    • The proposed budget (if approved) will form the framework for the budgetary activity in the research. If deemed necessary, changes in the budget’s items are possible if approved by the Halbert Center’s academic committee.

    Your application will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • Overall academic excellence
  • Significant Canadian content
  • Reasons for collaboration with a Canadian colleague on the specific project and the potential academic contribution of the new collaboration.
  • Likelihood of ensuing publications

Final Report: The final report, submitted via e-mail to the Halbert Centre, must clearly acknowledge the support of the Halbert Centre for Canadian Studies. It may consist of one of the following:

  • A manuscript of publishable quality and the length of a scholarly journal article, - or - A detailed description of the research team's work (or individual's in case of an individual grant) and the current results of the collaborative project.
